Raw hide is one of the earliest materials used by human beings to create, from braiding for cordage, hide for sewing, clothes, shelter, pots for cooking food, Bow strings, clothing, shields, armour, parchment, and for musical instruments. Once dry it has a half life of about 500 or so years, when wet, is super malleable, and when its left in the earth, composts nicely, unlike our current equivalents.

Reference material such as The Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding by Bruce Grant 1972 is an excellent exploration tool for those interested.
